Arber Xhekaj Biography:-

Arber Xhekaj is a professional ice hockey player from Canada who plays for the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens (NHL).

Xhekaj was renowned for having a somewhat small physique when playing minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies; as a consequence, he was passed over in the 2017 Ontario Hockey League entry selection. He described it as “very difficult” since just two qualified players on his squad were not selected. Despite considering quitting hockey, his parents pushed him to keep playing. He caught the attention of the Kitchener Rangers scouting department after playing for the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s St. Catharines Falcons. They bet that he would avoid being selected in the draft during his second year of eligibility. Xhekaj was granted access to the Rangers’ training camp in 2018. He joined the squad and competed in the OHL for two seasons until the COVID-19 epidemic halted play for the 2020–21 season. His chances of moving through the professional levels were not good since he was not selected in either the 2020 or 2021 NHL drafts. But before to the 2021–22 NHL season, he once again earned a training camp invitation, this time from the Montreal Canadiens. The squad management was pleased with Xhekaj’s performance. On October 4, 2021, he agreed to a three-year, entry-level deal with the Canadiens as an undrafted free agent.

For the 2021–22 season, Xhekaj returned to the Rangers and earned a reputation as a dangerous defenseman who “successfully mixed the old-school enforcer with the modern-day defensive blueliner,” according to The Hockey News. He received two suspensions in the fall: once for a slew foot and another for a gesture made during an altercation. He was referred as among his colleagues as “the Sheriff.” Xhekaj was traded to his hometown Hamilton Bulldogs in the middle of the season. Xhekaj joined a highly regarded Bulldogs squad and played in the 2022 Memorial Cup in addition to helping them win the J. Ross Robertson Cup in the OHL playoffs. In the Memorial Cup championship game, the Bulldogs fell to the Saint John Sea Dogs. For the competition, Xhekaj was selected to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team.

Xhekaj was previously thought to have a better chance of earning a regular spot on the Canadiens’ AHL club Laval Rocket, but he proceeded to stand out in rookie tournament and preseason action. His physically tough preseason play caught the eye of several organizations, most notably the Ottawa Senators. He said “It’s very fantastic when the whole Sens Nation is talking about me. I like playing the villain.” There were more opportunities for rookies to join the lineup since the Canadiens’ two experienced left defensemen, Mike Matheson and Joel Edmundson, were both injured during the preseason. Xhekaj was officially added to the Canadiens’ opening night roster for the 2022–23 regular season on October 10, 2022. On October 12, Xhekaj made his NHL debut, making him the first player in NHL history whose last name starts with the letter X. In a game on October 15 against the Washington Capitals, he recorded an assist for his first NHL point. He defeated Zack Kassian in his debut NHL match on October 20, 2022.

Private life

Xhekaj’s mother Simona is from Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic, while his father Arber (also known as Jack) is from Kosovo and is of Albanian heritage. Both had fled their own nations in the 1990s when they first met in Hamilton at a motel.

After the 2020–21 OHL season was canceled because to the COVID–19 epidemic, Xhekaj worked at a Costco in Hamilton. Florian, Xhekaj’s younger brother, played with Hamilton in the Ontario Hockey League.
