Marie Durrieu graduated from the Master of Political Science, Program in International Relations and is a teacher and associate doctoral student at the Institute for Strategic Research of the Ecole Militaire (IRSEM).

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATION HISTORY?

I learnt about the existence of Sciences Po’s regional campuses when I was in my last year of high school and enrolled in the science stream at the Lycée Français de Barcelone. These campuses mix international openness, a multidisciplinary approach, and vibrant student life. Though I was hesitant to go from the hard sciences to the social sciences, Sciences Po and the Euro-American program at Reims persuaded me to do so.

After learning about the many fields at Science Po for two years in Reims, I became interested in international relations. I completed a rigorous and unique third year at the University of Texas in Austin where I elected to study philosophy, a subject I love but had set aside after high school. This was done before deciding on my Master’s degree. I finally understood that international relations was what I really wanted to study.

I debated for a very long time whether to pursue a master’s degree at Sciences Po’s Paris School of International Affairs or at the School of Research, which provides a political science program with an international relations concentration. The research route eventually seemed to be the best approach for me to integrate my interest in philosophical conceptual analysis with my profession, which is international affairs. I spent two years completing the Sciences Po School of Research’s Master’s degree, which combines instruction in political science fundamentals, social science research and technique, and a deeper grasp of international events.

As part of my Master’s degree requirements, I also had to produce a research report. Under the direction of Professor Frédéric Charillon, I decided to do research on the function of humiliation in international relations. I was able to research a topic that was understudied in the area, go to Israel and Palestine, and produce a thesis that L’Harmattan eventually turned into a book (*). It was a thrilling encounter that had a major impact on my later career.

After experiencing research, you’ll never want to stop. I didn’t intend to pursue a PhD when I enrolled in the Master’s degree at the School of Research, but I ultimately made the decision to do so since I was so enthusiastic about my field. I’m a contractual doctorate student enrolled in my second year of a PhD program at the Military School’s Institute for Strategic Research (IRSEM).

WHAT HAD YOU BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE AFTER YEARS OF STUDYING AT THE SCIENCES PO SCHOOL OF RESEARCH?

The School of Research was a significant turning point for me on various levels.

First off, I developed a very wide basis of knowledge and abilities in the social sciences throughout my first three years at Sciences Po. I did, however, feel the urge to specialize and go farther. I accomplished my goal in two ways by joining the School of Research. I was able to improve my grasp of several theories and concepts in political science and international relations as a result of the instruction, on the one hand. On the other hand, I acquired extensive understanding of research techniques and equipment that today allow me to independently explore certain global topics. For instance, after graduating from the School of Research, I’ve written a number of essays analyzing global news stories; this capacity to analyze global affairs is primarily a result of the training I got.

Second, I didn’t want to pursue a PhD when I enrolled in the School of Research since I wasn’t sure of my post-graduation plans. I am, however, in the second year of writing my thesis, so it is obvious that the School of Research assisted me in finding my bearings. In particular, Professor Guillaume Devin, who oversaw the Master’s program, and Professor Frédéric Charillon, who oversaw my thesis, deserve my sincere gratitude for their role in assisting me in discovering my calling.

WHICH MEMORY DO YOU HAVE OF YOUR SCHOOL, CLASS, AND TEACHERS?

I consider Sciences Po’s School of Research to be a unique tiny microcosm. The School of Research is a limited, isolated world because individuals who don’t select research often have misconceptions about it. In this universe, theoretical arguments are had over coffee, and conversations on the most recent novels we’ve read keep lunchtimes interesting. Our instructors are the authors of our textbooks and the conference leaders. In this cosmos, which is often exciting and sometimes unsettling, we are continually attempting to comprehend the world around us and how it works.

WHAT ROLE DO YOU PLAY RIGHT NOW?

I’m a teacher and PhD candidate right now.

My thesis project examines how humiliation plays a role in international relations, especially those in the Middle East. At the Centre Michel de l’Hospital research lab, Professors Frédéric Charillon and Thomas Lindemann jointly oversee my work. The DGRIS is paying for my doctorate contract (department of the Ministry of Defence). Consequently, I am a PhD associate candidate at the Military School’s Institute for Strategic Research.

I also mix a variety of instructional activities with my study. On the Reims campus, I teach a number of political science and international relations courses. Being on the other side of the same classroom from where my academic path started has great significance for me. I just stood in these kids’ shoes, therefore I’m ecstatic to be able to share my love with them. At the University of Clermont Ferrand Auvergne, I also teach an introductory lecture course in political science. This is a totally different experience, but it’s as impactful and enlightening. A course that blends negotiation simulation with international relations theory that I will be presenting for the first time this summer at the Sciences Po Summer School is one of the several educational initiatives I have coming up. I never would have thought of teaching, but I really find it to be a very fascinating activity, and I would encourage it to anybody starting the lonesome road to a PhD.
