Sophie Neuendorf Biography:-
We spoke with Sophie Neuendorf at her family’s vacation house in Mallorca about internet art sales, the cost of female artists’ creations, and the value of spending time with loved ones.
It should come as no surprise that Sophie Neuendorf developed a passion for contemporary art at a young age given that she is the daughter of German art dealer and founder of Artnet, Hans Neuendorf. Artnet is the premier online resource for the global art market and the place to buy, sell, and research art online. In the best way possible, Neuendorf says, “His work has dictated my whole life.” She recalls going to art fairs, taking family vacations to cultural hotspots like Florence, Rome, and Venice, and relocating from Germany to New York as a young child so her father could concentrate on building his now-famous digital platform. Prior to that, the family was situated in Frankfurt, where Neuendorf was raised in an apartment stuffed to the gills with works by some of the greatest artists in history, including Lucio Fontana, Robert Graham, Georg Baselitz, and Pino Pinelli. According to Neuendorf, “We could have had a Warhol or two at the time.” “What you see and are exposed to during these formative years makes a lasting imprint. My dad used to be an art dealer, and I was incredibly fascinated by it. We probably have similar preferences.
Neuendorf, who has a strong interest in visual culture, unexpectedly decided against studying art history in college. I thought I had to study something else since I had been exposed to it constantly since infancy, she explains. Neuendorf studied International Business Administration in London because she wanted to “not be a cliché” and work in a field unrelated to that of her father. She thought this study would provide her a broad range of job alternatives. “At 18 or 19, you never know whether your interests will be the same in five or 10 years. I went with the widest topic I could. I’m still glad that I chose to pursue painting as a career. While working on “the corporate side” of the sector, Neuendorf found that her education had been quite beneficial. “The majority of people have an image of the art scene as being highly bohemian and full of intriguing creatives. Of course, it plays a role, but there are also many bottom lines and financial considerations.
Neuendorf had first-hand knowledge of the significance of her father’s company while gaining experience via internships at the Jablonka Galerie in Cologne, Art Cologne—the German art market her father helped found—and Christie’s. “Prior to that, I found it to be a little abstract. I never really paid much attention to what my father did with data, she claims. While she was working at Christie’s, Artnet had a server issue in New York. The pricing database on the website was inaccessible to everyone. “Christie advised me to contact my dad and ask him to repair this. We need to confirm the information since we are about to make a deal. That truly made me realize how important Artnet is to the business and how beneficial it is to them.
