Meet the 3 Children of Hazel McCallion: Herbert Armand Journeaux and Amanda Maude Travers gave birth to Hazel McCallion on February 14, 1921, a successful businesswoman and politician from Canada.
She graduated from Quebec High School and continued her education in business secretarial schools in Quebec City and Montreal. Her family was unable to pay for her to attend university, thus she was unable to pursue higher education.
In Streetsville, McCallion started her political career, but she was unsuccessful in her first election. She ran for deputy reeve for the first time in 1964. Later, she was named the Streetsville Planning Board’s chairman.
She was re-elected as deputy reeve following the 1967 election, and in the following year (1968), she was installed as reeve. McCallion was elected mayor of Streetsville in 1970 and held the position through 1973.
McCallion received a resounding victory in the Mississauga council race in 1976. She has held executive positions on numerous organizations and organisations at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels.
Before being elected Mississauga’s mayor, McCallion served on almost all of the committees for Peel Region and the City of Mississauga. She took office as mayor of Mississauga for the first time in November 1978 and governed the city for 12 terms, until she was 94 years old.
