Jack Harper Biography:-

For NewsCenter 5 on WCVB-TV, general assignment reporter Jack Harper works. He has worked as a weekend news anchor since 1981, when he first joined the station as a freelance reporter.

Harper has covered various aviation tragedies in Florida, Long Island, Nova Scotia, Queens, and at the World Trade Center site in New York during his time at NewsCenter 5. He went to New Mexico in May 2000 to cover the deadly wildfires there.

For 26 years, Harper has covered local news in Boston. He formerly served as a reporter for Boston’s WEEI Radio before joining Channel 5. While there, Harper received a 1982 Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for his coverage of a World Airways jet tragedy at Logan Airport. His coverage of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing also helped the station win another significant prize.

Additionally, he has received numerous individual accolades for his great reporting, such as the Associated Press, United Press International, and the renowned 1989 Dennis Kauff Award given to Boston’s top broadcast journalist.

Harper previously held the position of News Director at WCNL in Exeter, New Hampshire, and WICE in Providence, Rhode Island, before moving to Boston in 1975.

Harper, a Frederick, Maryland native, received his degree from the Northeast Broadcasting School in 1970. He served in the Air Force for four years before leaving with the rank of sergeant.
