Juan Merchan Biography:-

Juan Manuel Merchan is a Colombian-American judge and former prosecutor who currently serves as an acting justice of the New York State Supreme Court. He was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1962 or 1963, and moved to New York City at the age of six. Merchan is married to Lauren Merchan, but information about his parents and children is not publicly available.

Merchan studied business at Baruch College in Manhattan and was the first member of his family to attend college. He graduated in 1990 and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Hofstra University Maurice A. Deane School of Law on Long Island in 1994.

Merchan began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in 1994, working in both the Trial Division and the Investigations Division, prosecuting financial frauds and other cases. In 1999, he started working for the New York State Attorney General’s office, first as Deputy Attorney General in-Charge of the Nassau County Region, and then as Assistant Attorney General in-Charge of Affirmative Litigation for Nassau and Suffolk Counties. He later served as Assistant Attorney General in-Charge of the Nassau County Region until 2006.

In 2006, Merchan became a judge when New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed him to the Family Court of the City of New York, Bronx County. He served in that role until 2009, when he was appointed as an Acting Justice in the Supreme Court of New York, New York County, Criminal, a position he has held ever since. As an Acting Justice, Merchan presides over felony criminal trials.

Merchan also served as a judge of the New York Court of Claims concurrently with his role as an Acting Justice in the Supreme Court of New York. He was appointed to this position by Governor David Paterson in 2009 and served until 2018.
